Back

Dr. Amelia H. Baugh has worked in the dental field since 2002. From the first moment she began dental assisting, she knew this was her career path and never veered off that path.

In 2004, Dr. Baugh graduated Cum Laude in Honors studies from Texas Tech University with her Bachelor of Science in Biology. Immediately upon graduating, she moved to Houston to begin her studies as a dentist. In 2008, she received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Texas-Dental Branch at Houston. After three years of being an associate at a practice in Fort Worth, Dr. Baugh took a leap of faith and started her private dental practice. Her exposure to a busy, all-inclusive dental office in Fort Worth has enabled her to construct a practice that implements all aspects of dentistry with minimal patient referral out of the office.

Dr. Baugh has strong interest in cosmetics, reconstruction, and orthodontics. She has attained certification in both Invisalign (invisible braces) and enteral sedation (sleep dentistry). Dr. Baugh also enjoys treating children of all ages.

In addition to continual professional improvement, Dr. Baugh is a strong proponent for community service. As a partner in education with Northwest ISD, Dr. Baugh promotes dental and oral health among students at surrounding elementary and middle schools within the district. She is actively involved in her church’s outreach program and is continually giving back to the community, especially children, through her dentistry.

Dr. Baugh is an active member in The American Dental Association, The Academy of General Dentistry, The Texas Dental Association, and The Fort Worth District Dental Society.

When she is away from the office, Dr. Baugh enjoys spending time with her two sons Tyler (4) and Zachary (2) and traveling with her husband Josh. In her remaining free time, you might find her at church, working out, or spending time outdoors.

Our Technology

Back

Avondale Haslet Dental Center is a state-of-the-art dental facility! With modern dental tools and techniques, Dr. Baugh and her team are revolutionizing today’s dentistry. The following are a few examples of how we are moving dentistry forward.

Digital Radiography

Our office uses digital radiography to take x-rays that may be needed to diagnose pathology or infection within your mouth. Digital x-rays use 90% less radiation than conventional film radiography. The exposure to a full set of digital x-rays is equivalent to spending an afternoon in the sun. Additionally, the quality and diagnostic ability of digital radiography is substantially better than film x-rays.

Using this technology, we are able to take x-rays of your mouth by using a small sensor which records the image of your teeth. This images are then processed by our clinical computers, and placed into your dental chart. Dr. Baugh can enhance these highly detailed images to adequately diagnosis oral pathology and determine the proper treatment of these concerns.

Computerized (Paperless) Charting

Our office is an all digital (paperless) dental office. There are computers in every exam room with sophisticated dental software which allow our staff to adequately chart your dental history, while minimizing your time in the chair. Computerized charting standardizes the charting process so it is clear and easy to understand. Ultimately, it enables us to provide our patients with the most accurate and precise care. Should we refer you to a specialist, digital charting allows us to quickly and securely share your dental information electronically.

Soprolife Camera with Early Cavity Detection

Intra-oral cameras have revolutionized the entire patient education process. The Soprolife camera is the newest breakthrough in dental technology. With the aid of this camera, Dr. Baugh will take you on a virtual tour of your mouth by displaying magnified images of your teeth on our operatory monitors. With a belief in minimally invasive dentistry, Dr. Baugh is able to preserve as much tooth structure as possible during the removal of a cavity.

Fluorescence technology is used to find and detect cavities sooner than with other techniques and devices. The Soprolife camera emits a light onto your tooth and, when it is in treatment or diagnosis mode, your tooth will emit a color that aids Dr. Baugh in determining if the tooth is healthy or diseased. This color change will allow you to see Dr. Baugh’s diagnosis much easier. The sooner a cavity is found, the less damage your tooth will endure, and the smaller the restoration.

Pelton & Crane ErgoSoothe™ Massage Chairs

Our dental chairs are equipped with ErgoSoothe™ massage technology – the world’s first fully integrated dental massaging system. Pelton & Crane, a leader in dental manufacturing, have combined critical elements that provide a unique patient experience during dental treatment. Sleek lines and quiet movements contribute to a stylish aesthetic, while ergonomic design and massage technology provide a relaxing dental environment. All patients can expect an unforgettable dental experience.

Orthodontics

Back

Orthodontic treatment is used to correct teeth that are crowded, crooked, protruding, out of alignment, or have irregular spacing. By moving teeth into their ideal position, dental braces will help create a more attractive and healthier smile for both children and adults. Dr. Baugh will be the first to spot potential problems with your teeth that might require braces to correct. She will determine if you are a candidate for orthodontic treatment, and discuss specific orthodontic needs with you during your dental visits. We are happy to announce that Dr. Patel, from Alliance Orthodontics in Keller, provides orthodontic treatment from our location as a convenience to our patients. Dr. Patel and his staff are a great addition to our team, and we can’t wait for you to meet them!

Free Consultations

Dr. Patel performs orthodontic consultations absolutely free of charge, no charge to you or your insurance provider. During this visit, Dr. Patel and his staff will go over your specific orthodontic treatment plan, discuss financial arrangements, and answer any questions you or your child may have concerning treatment. This consultation allows our patients the opportunity to get to know our preferred orthodontist and his staff in the comfortable surroundings of their own family dental practice.

Are Braces (Straighter Teeth) Necessary?

Keeping your teeth clean becomes very difficult when your teeth are crooked and crowded. When brushing and flossing cannot be performed properly, tooth decay, gum disease, and possible tooth loss may occur.

An improper bite can interfere with your ability to chew or speak properly. It may also cause abnormal wear to the enamel of your teeth. If your teeth are protruding and your upper and lower teeth don’t come together comfortably (called malocclusion), problems related to your jaw may arise.

Therefore, by keeping your teeth in the proper alignment and allowing better oral hygiene, orthodontic treatment does more than keeping your smile looking good. They will keep your teeth, gums, and oral cavity healthy. There is now evidence to prove that the periodontal infections resulting from poor oral hygiene can enter the blood stream and cause cardiac conditions, or worsen existing cardiac complications.

Indications/Causes for Orthodontic Treatment

The most common oral health issue requiring the need for orthodontic treatment is a bad bite (malocclusion). A malocclusion may be caused by one or more factors:

The Right Age for Dental Braces

A person typically inherits tooth spacing, malocclusion, crowding, misalignment or similar problems from their parents. However, these conditions also may be caused by habits such as thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting, lip wedging, mouth breathing due to allergies or large tonsils and adenoids, premature loss of teeth or trauma, and generally begin to appear between the ages of six and 12 years old — the time when the permanent teeth start to erupt. Therefore, orthodontic treatment should begin between the ages of eight and 14 in order to achieve optimal results.

It is generally considered ideal to have an orthodontic evaluation no later than the age of seven, since this is when there is a good mix of primary (baby) and adult teeth in the mouth. Also, Dr. Patel is able to spot developing teeth and jaw growth at this time in a child's life. This enables him to anticipate problems that may arise and plan orthodontic treatment accordingly.

Adults and Dental Braces

Children are not the only ones who may benefit from dental braces. Adults also can undergo orthodontic treatment to correct alignment, spacing, crowding and malocclusion problems. The process for moving teeth is basically the same at any age, but the treatment may take longer for adults. This is due to the fact that adult facial bones are no longer growing, and certain corrections may not be possible utilizing braces alone. Depending on the specific type and severity of your alignment or malocclusion problem, tooth extraction or maxillofacial surgery may be required.

Oral Surgery

Back

Oral surgery falls into two categories: simple extractions and surgical extractions. Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible above the gum line. Slow and steady pressure is applied with controlled force to remove the tooth. Surgical extractions are performed on teeth that are not easily accessed. A drill may be required to help free the tooth from the surrounding jawbone.

Your third molars (wisdom teeth) generally erupt during your late teens or early twenties. They often lack the proper space in the jaw to erupt fully, or even at all. This condition is called impaction. When a tooth lacks the space to come through, or develops in the wrong place of your jaw, problems may arise. Damage to adjacent teeth, infection in surrounding gum tissue, and crowding of other teeth may occur if your third molars are not removed.

In certain cases, your wisdom teeth may develop a fluid filled sac around its underlying root. This abscess may become infected causing serious damage to the underlying bone, the surrounding teeth, and the neighboring gum tissue. To prevent such complications, Dr. Baugh may suggest extracting one or more of your wisdom teeth. While Dr. Baugh will extract fully erupted wisdom teeth, it is our office policy to refer you to an oral surgeon for the removal of impacted wisdom teeth.

Indications / Causes for an Extraction

Simple and surgical extractions are performed for a variety of reasons:

Endodontics

Back

Endondontic therapy (root canal therapy) is a procedure to save a tooth whose internal nerve tissue has been damaged by decay, infection or trauma. A root canal can help maintain the life of a tooth for many years, preventing it from being extracted. While this procedure is routinely performed by Dr. Baugh, certain circumstances may require her to refer you to an endodontist (root canal specialist).

Dr. Baugh will access the pulp chamber in the crown of the infected tooth to reveal the canals contained in the roots of the tooth. The nerve will be removed, and the canals will be shaped using special files to smooth the walls. This ensures no pulp tissue or infection has been left behind. The root canals will then filled with gutta percha, a special material used to seal the canals.

After a root canal has been performed on a tooth, the tooth may become brittle. A crown is usually placed on this tooth to protect it from fracturing, thus prolonging the life of the tooth.

Indications / Causes for a Root Canal

Common symptoms that may indicate the need for a root canal:

Pediatric Dentistry

Back

While Dr. Baugh is specifically a general/family dentist, seeing children is one of her greatest joys of her profession. Therefore, we enjoy having children as part of our dental family and love watching their growth and development throughout the years. There is a special children’s play area in our waiting room where your little ones can play or watch cartoons while waiting to be seen by Dr. Baugh. Every effort will be made to insure your child's dental visit is a positive experience.

Discussion Topics

Initial Visit

Your child’s primary teeth (baby teeth) are just as important as their permanent teeth. Not only do primary teeth aid with speaking and eating, they hold space in the jaw for the permanent teeth to erupt. Around the age of six months, your baby’s primary teeth should begin to appear. The ADA recommends a dental visit by the age of 1 or within 6 months after his or her first tooth comes in.

Your child’s first visit will take approximately 20 minutes, and usually involves very little treatment. This appointment gives your child an opportunity to meet Dr. Baugh in a non-threatening and friendly way. If your child does not want to sit in the dental chair alone, then we may require you to sit in the dental chair with them for the examination. This will aid in calming any fears they may be experiencing.

Dr. Baugh will check your child's teeth for decay, examine their bite, and look for any potential problems with the gums, jaw, and oral tissues. Dr. Baugh will also clean and polish your child’s teeth. A fluoride treatment may be applied to their teeth to help prevent tooth decay. Dr. Baugh will also answer any question you have pertaining to your child’s oral health.

Routine Visits

Your child should be seen at our office every six months. This will allow Dr. Baugh to build up your child’s comfort and confidence level. X-rays may be recommended to check for decay and evaluate the developmental progress of your child's permanent teeth under the gums. Regular visits also help Dr. Baugh monitor the development of primary teeth, while allowing her to treat any minor problems before they become big problems.

Once your child’s permanent teeth have fully erupted, braces may be needed to help straighten your child’s teeth. If needed, Dr. Baugh will talk to you about an orthodontic consultation. When your child is ready for orthodontic placement, Dr. Patel is an amazing orthodontist that comes to our office regularly. We partnered with him so that your child will be able to get orthodontic treatment and general dental services within the same facility.

Preventive Dentistry

Back

Our dental hygienists are licensed professionals that specialize in preventive care. They play a vital role in our patients overall dental health. To educate our patients, our hygienist will demonstrate proper oral hygiene techniques during your scheduled appointment.

What to Expect at My First Visit?

After an initial examination of your mouth, the hygienist will determine if there are any abnormalities present or if periodontal (gum) disease exists. This evaluation will allow Dr. Baugh and the hygienist to determine which level of cleaning is required. Common procedures performed by our hygienists are Dental Prophylaxis (routine cleanings), Full Mouth Debridements, and Scaling and Root Planning. During your cleaning, the hygienist will remove calculus (tartar), stains, and plaque from your teeth. Once the calculus and plaque is removed, the hygienist will polish your teeth using a special prophy paste. If desired, requested, or recommended, a fluoride treatment may also be applied to increase the strength of your teeth. Sealants may also be applied to your teeth if they are free of cavities.

Why Should My Teeth be Cleaned Professionally?

Plaque is a form of bacteria that adheres to tooth structure. Over time, plaque hardens and becomes calcified. At this stage, it becomes what is called calculus (tartar). Plaque and calculus are irritants to the tissues of your mouth. The reaction of these irritants within your mouth lead to subsequent gum inflammation, gum recession, gum bleeding, and eventual bone loss around the teeth. These conditions constitute periodontal (gum) disease.

Smoking, certain types of illnesses (diabetes), older age, and other factors increase the risk for periodontal disease. More than 75% of American adults have some form of gum disease, and do not even know it. The earliest stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis (which is reversible) and is characterized by bleeding gums, especially when one brushes and flosses. If the disease is not addressed, it will progress to periodontitis, which is far more destructive. Periodontitis is characterized by gum deterioration, bone loss, and ultimately tooth loss.

Dental Prophylaxis

A routine dental cleaning is also known as a dental prophylaxis or prophy. This procedure is typically performed every six months. The main purpose of a prophylaxis visit is to maintain optimum oral health, while reducing the risk of gum disease.

While flossing and brushing your teeth regularly helps maintain proper oral health above the gum line, it is difficult for your toothbrush and floss to reach all areas surrounding your teeth. Below the gum line, dental calculus or tartar typically build up. Routine dental hygiene visits are recommended to adequately clean above and below the gum line. Your dental cleaning involves both scaling and polishing your teeth. During the scaling process, meticulous tools are used to remove tartar, plaque, and staining from your teeth. Once the calculus and plaque is removed, your teeth are polished to remove rough spots which might otherwise attract bacteria.

Full Mouth Debridement

A full mouth debridement is the first of two "cleanings" which is performed when there is excessive build up on the teeth, inflammation of the gums, and bleeding of the gingival tissue. This type of cleaning is common with patients who do not visit the dentist regularly. The first cleaning is when most of the calculus is removed from the teeth by using ultrasonic equipment. Dental tools are then used to remove additional calculus. This allows for the gum tissues to begin healing and the inflammation to decrease.

After 2-3 weeks of healing, a “fine scale” appointment is scheduled to accomplish a final cleaning of the teeth. The gum tissue will be healthier, allowing any remaining visible calculus to be removed. Once all the calculus is removed, your teeth will be polished to remove rough spots which might otherwise attract bacteria.

Scaling & Root Planning

Scaling and root planning is the most common form of treatment for periodontal disease. Scaling removes calculus and plaque from the tooth surfaces of your teeth above and below the gum line. Root planning smoothes the root surfaces and rids your teeth of any additional calculus below the gum line. If there is an extensive amount of calculus to be removed, Dr. Baugh or the hygienist will numb the area to make the procedure more comfortable. A combination of sonic and hand instruments are used during this procedure. The sonic instruments remove the large deposits of plaque and calculus. Hand instruments are then used to remove any remaining calculus and ensure all surfaces of the crown and root are clean and free of bacteria.

Sensitivity and soreness may be present a few days following this treatment. Typically, over-the-counter pain relievers are used to relieve pain. A follow-up visit is usually scheduled six weeks or ninety days following treatment. During this visit, the hygienist will clean your teeth again, while monitoring the improvement of your gum disease.

To aid in monitoring the disease, a routine periodontal maintenance visit is scheduled every 3 to 4 months. Once you have been diagnosed with periodontal gum disease, regular visits to the dentist will ultimately help prevent tooth loss. The ultimate goal is to eliminate active inflammation caused by bacteria, to reduce periodontal pockets around the teeth so they cannot trap plaque or calculus, and to maintain the present bone height around the teeth.

Fluoride Treatments

A fluoride treatment is a highly concentrated form of fluoride that is applied directly to your teeth. Professional fluoride treatments only take a few minutes, and are much stronger than treatments available over-the-counter. Your fluoride treatment will be applied using either a gel or a foam.

Typically, it is applied to your teeth after your dental cleaning has been performed. It may be applied to the enamel, dentine, or cementum of your teeth and is useful to help prevent decay. After the application of fluoride, you may be asked not to rinse, eat, or drink or at least 30 minutes. This will allow your teeth to absorb the fluoride and help repair microscopic carious areas.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a plastic material that is usually applied to the chewing surfaces of your teeth. This plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces of your teeth. Sealants provide a defensive barrier, which aid in protection from acids and plaque. As long as your dental sealants remain intact, your teeth will be protected from decay. A reapplication may be required after several years.

Sealants are easy to apply, and only takes a few minutes to apply to each of your tooth. They are usually applied once your teeth have been cleaned. For the sealants to properly adhere, your teeth are roughened with an acid solution. The sealants are then applied directly onto the enamel of your teeth, where it bonds to your teeth and hardens. A curing light may be used to help the sealants harden.

Your initial exam will last approximately one and a half hours. We will provide a comprehensive head and neck exam, an oral cancer screening, and a jaw joint (TMJ) screening. We will check your gum health, take any necessary x-rays, provide oral hygiene instructions, discuss any recommended treatment, and answer any questions you may have. If the health of your gums is good and you are current on your cleanings, then we will also clean your teeth on this visit.  If time permits, we are willing to begin treatment on this day if it is so desired.

If you have any special conditions, requests, or questions please be sure to tell us about them at this first visit.

Post-op Instructions

What to Expect from your Root Canal:

1. Do not eat or chew until the numbness wears off.
2. Expect the tooth to be sore and to have a bruised feeling in the jaw around the tooth for several weeks afterward.
3. Take prescribed medication according to instructions. If no prescription was required, then take over- the-counter pain medication (i.e. Advil) three times per day for three days. Remember, it is easier to prevent pain before it starts than to relieve it, so take a dose of pain medication before the numbness wears off.
4. Warm, moist compresses help relieve soreness or mild aching.
5. Remember that most root canal treated teeth require a crown to be placed as soon as possible to prevent the tooth from breaking. Because the tooth has lost its blood supply, it no longer receives nourishment. This causes the tooth to become more brittle and increases the chance of a fracture. Teeth that have had root canals and are not covered with a crown often break and must be extracted.

Dr. Baugh believes in her work and materials, but more than anything we want you to be satisfied with your care. We therefore provide a twelve month limited warranty on our root canals. Although root canals are very successful, there is a 6% failure rate even when done perfectly. If the treated tooth must receive further nerve-related treatment within twelve months of completing the root canal, we will refund the cost of the root canal, provided the following conditions are met:

A. The tooth had the recommended restoration placed over the root canal (Crown, Onlay, or Permanent filling) within three weeks of root canal completion.
B. You have maintained the recommended teeth cleaning interval (three, four, or six months depending on the health of your gums).

Of course, the best way to ensure the longevity of your treatment is to maintain excellent home care.

What to Expect from your New Fillings:

1. Do not eat or chew until the numbness wears off.
2. Your filling will typically be sensitive to cold and heat for up to a week. This is a result of the nerve being irritated by cleaning out the decay. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever about three times a day for three days to soothe the nerve of the tooth. Anti- inflammatory medications, like Advil, are best for dental discomfort. Sensitivity should gradually subside within a week to ten days; if not, please call our office.
3. Once the numbness wears off, your filling will feel “new,” but should not feel like it is high to the point that it prevents your other teeth from coming together normally. If your filling does feel too high, please contact us as soon as possible to have it adjusted.
4. If the decay or old filling was near the nerve, we placed a medication to soothe the nerve. Our practice philosophy is to provide the most conservative treatment possible. For this reason, we do not perform root canals on all teeth that exhibit deep decay. If the nerve of the tooth was healthy before we began, then the medication is very effective and you will likely do fine. If the nerve was unhealthy at the outset, then placing a filling could be the proverbial “straw that breaks the camel’s back,” causing the nerve to die and necessitating further treatment.

Dr. Baugh believes in her work and materials, but more than anything we want you to be satisfied with your care.  We therefore provide a three year limited warranty on our fillings.  If a filling fails for any reason within three years of placement, we will replace the filling free of charge, provided you have maintained the recommended teeth cleaning interval (three, four, or six months depending on the health of your gums).

Of course, the best way to ensure the longevity of your treatment is to maintain excellent home care.

What to Expect from your New Crown:

1. Do not eat or chew until the numbness wears off.
2. Ensure that the temporary crown stays on the tooth. If the temporary crown is lost, the teeth will shift and the permanent crown will not fit. Please contact us immediately if your temporary comes off.
3. Do not eat hard, sticky, or chewy foods (such as nuts, gum, caramel, and jerky) as they will dislodge the temporary crown.
4. Brush around the temporary crown normally, but do not floss. Once the permanent crown is seated, you should resume flossing.
5. It is extremely important that the permanent crown be seated in a timely fashion. If too much time passes between preparing the tooth and cementing the crown, the crown will not fit. This can occur even if the temporary crown stays in place. If this occurs, the tooth must be re-prepared, the lab must fabricate a new crown, and additional fees will be assessed to cover the expense. Please do not miss your appointment to seat the crown.
6. Take over-the-counter pain medication (like Advil or Tylenol) three times per day for three days. This will help the nerve settle down and will soothe sore gums.

Dr. Baugh believes in her work and materials, but more than anything we want you to be satisfied with your care.  We therefore provide a three year limited warranty on our crowns. If a crown fails within three years of placement, we will replace the crown free of charge, provided you have maintained the recommended teeth cleaning interval (three, four, or six months depending on the health of your gums).

FAQs

Back

Q. How often should I see a dentist?
A. The American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines recommend visiting a dentist at least twice a year for a checkup and professional cleaning. Our office also recommends a minimum of two visits per year.

Q. What if I have an emergency?
A. Please call our office as soon as you determine that you have a dental emergency. We will be glad to work you in to our schedule if you have a dental emergency during regular business hours. After hours, over the weekend, and during holidays, please call our office for the doctor’s emergency contact number.

Q. Are payment plans available for my dental treatment?
A. Yes. We accept many types of dental insurance and will process your claim upon receipt of your co-payment. We offer a low interest rate payment plan with care credit and also accept most major credit cards.

Q. What should I expect during my appointment?
A. One of our staff members will compile your medical and dental history during your first visit. We will then examine your teeth and gums, screen you for oral cancer, make X-rays of your teeth as needed, and complete a TMJ exam. After we review your dental profile, we will discuss a diagnosis with you. We will discuss your options for treatment and fee payment and help you determine the best plan to fit your needs. During your follow up visits, we will follow our treatment plan that we created together and will lead you to your perfect smile.

Q. Can I use over the counter bleaching products?
A. Other over-the-counter daily bleaching products are available, but it is important to use any bleaching product only under the supervision of a dentist. To achieve the whitening results you desire, the ADA recommends that you seek the professional advice of a dentist, including examination and diagnosis of the cause of tooth discoloration, before you begin any bleaching program.
